Abstract
In order to identify palatable base baits to confect poisonous baits,to control the damage of the red bellied squirrel in economic plantation, experiments were conducted on the palatability of three common baits (apples, carrots and corns) for the red bellied squirrels in laboratory. The results showed that in single-choice tests, the palatability index of apples to carrots and corns were 0.88 and 0.49,respectively.In multi-choice tests, the palatability index of apples to carrots and corns were 0.36 and 0.30,respectively.The palatability of apples was the best, followed by carrots and corns.Tests were also made on the palatability and deratization effect of bromadiolone and chemosterilant baits in different concentration. The results showed that palatability of all poisonous baits were good, and the palatability of bromadiolone baits was better than that of chemosterilant baits.0.01% bromadiolone baits and 1.00% chemosterilant baits would cause 100% mortality. The deratization effect of bromadiolone baits was better than that of chemosterilant baits after the first feeding, but the lethal time was longer.Taking palatability, killing rates and lethal time into account, the use of 0.01% bromadiolone apple baits and 1.00% chemosterilant apple baits were recommended to control the red bellied squirrels.
